PhD Scholarship at Centre for Sports Studies, University of Kent

Topic: What underpins independent learning in education and sport?

Description:
Motivation impacts upon the behaviour and learning processes of students and athletes alike. The broad aims for this project are to examine the factors underpinning independent learning, determine how to measure these factors, and to explore if there are similarities in the role of independent learning in for both education and sport. A particular focus for this project will be on the influence of motivation and behavioural regulation in order to gain a better understanding of what underpins independent learning.

This PhD studentship is funded by the University of Kent and is supported by Brompton Academy. Brompton Academy has changed its delivery methods to emphasise independent learning and enhance the education of its students. Now the University and the Academy aim to enhance the impact of these changes by developing a programme of research to better understand the development of a successful independent learner.

What the work will include:
For this PhD project you will work with staff and pupils of Brompton Academy, the Centre for Sports Studies at the University of Kent, as well as local coaches and athletes. It is envisaged that the project will include conducting focus groups and surveys of pupils, students, athletes as well as teachers, lecturers and coaches to ascertain their views on learning. An intended outcome of this project is the development of an instrument to assess the independent learning of pupils, students and athletes.

Requirements:

  • A good degree (2:1 or 1st) or Masters degree in psychology, education or sport, or another related discipline.
  • An advanced knowledge and understanding of one or more of the above disciplines.
  • Strong grasp of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Funding details:
The Centre for Sports Studies is offering one Graduate Teaching Assistantship. Students engaged as Graduate Teaching Assistants hold a unique position in the University; they are both registered students in receipt of a scholarship award and employees of the University.
The GTA will cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate plus a combined maintenance grant and salary, equivalent to the maintenance grant offered by the Research Councils (£13,590 in 2011-12).
The GTA will be offered for one year in the first instance, renewable for a maximum of three years subject to satisfactory academic performance.
